The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) is hosting the Regional Ferry Safety Conference from 25th to 26th with participants from International bodies.
With the theme “Charting Safer Waters: Advancing Ferry Safety Through Innovation, Collaboration, and Integrated Transport Solutions”, the Conference is at Grand African Ball Room Lagos Continental Hotel, Plot 52A, Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos Nigeria.
The conference is organized by Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in partnership with the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) and INTERFERRY, two reputable international organizations dedicated to the advancement of ferry transport in our region.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) was established by the Lagos State Government (LASG) in 2008 to regulate, develop and manage all aspects of the waterways of Lagos State.
LASWA is committed to the growth in ferry services within an integrated public transport system by promoting the increased utilization of the waterways network through significant private sector participation.
Through LASWA, the LASG has embarked on policy reforms that promote and facilitate investments for the provision of water transport aimed at realizing its potential towards becoming an attractive mode of transport.
The fundamental responsibility of LASWA is to manage, improve and enhance navigation opportunities for Lagos State's inland waterways MOWCA is a regional Intergovernmental Organization established through the Abidjan maritime transport charter with twenty-five-member Countries among which are twenty coastal and five landlocked countries.
They are saddled with the responsibility of promoting maritime safety and security, preservation and protection of the marine environment, harmonization of maritime laws and capacity building for maritime stakeholders.
INTERFERRY is the only association that represents the worldwide ferry industry on safety and regulatory issues and facilitates the sharing of best practices and networking opportunities for 2000 plus individuals representing 280 member companies across 40 countries.
INTERFERRY is committed to improving ferry safety in Africa and has proven it by hosting a successful conference together with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in April 2024 in Dar-es-Sallam, Tanzania as well as another ferry safety workshop during at the annual INTERFERRY global conference in Marrakech, Morrocco in October 2024.
The primary objective of this conference is to bring together key stakeholders, including various states accessible by water, government officials, ferry operators, maritime experts, and policy makers, to engage in productive discussions concerning the current state and future prospects of ferry transport services within the region.
Attendees will have the opportunity to share best practices, address challenges, explore innovative solutions to enhance ferry transport efficiency and safety and also be given the opportunity for exhibition
.It is anticipated that this conference will not only foster knowledge exchange among participants but also establish stronger partnerships within the ferry transport community, ultimately contributing to the advancement of the maritime sector in Lagos State and beyond and also enhancing connectivity and promoting sustainable transport options in Lagos State.
