Events in the past few weeks should be a concern to Nigerians at home and abroad as a once peaceful country has become a land of blood. Hardly would a day pass without an ugly incident. If the bandits did not kill people, Boko Haram will be in action killing innocent people in the north.
The numbers of assassination increase daily without any arrest of culprits. Recently a top Chieftain of the ruling party, APC, Ahmed Gulak was assassinated in Imo State in broad daylight after a national assignment in the state.
In Ibadan, Oyo State, a businessman was gunned down, while a retired judge also met his waterloo in the hands of assasinators.
At least seven personnel of the Nigerian police force were recently killed in Rivers State, while in a mere local government primary election of APC in Lagos State, two people were killed in Surulere local government area.
In a private University (Greenville University in Abuja, kidnappers killed five students because their parents could not pay their ransom on time.
It is now so bad that travellers are no longer safe on our highways as kidnappers have find a way of making millions through kidnapping of travellers.
The orgy of violence and killings going on in the South East of the country is worrisome as clashes between law enforcement agents agitators for Biafra state consume lives daily.
Not only that ritual killers are everywhere killing people for rituals. In fact lives are so cheap in Nigeria of today as people are being killed in senseless violence.
Many have attributed the violence and killings to the insecurity in the country as it seems the police whose responsibility is to maintain law and order are overwhelmed by events
To many Nigerians the way to go is to decentralized the Nigerian police and allow for police and community police. This could only be achieved through the amendment of the Constitution which the present federal government is not ready to yield to.
Despite many states creating security outfits to aid the police their actions could not be visible as they are not allowed to carry arms and ammnuitions.
Many Nigerians are calling on the federal government to be proactive in combating crime in the country and take concrete action to strengthen
the police and other paramilitary outfits such as Nigeria Civil Defence Corps and also give concession for security outfits by the states to carry arms.
A school of thought also believe that the
surge in crime could be attributed to the large percentage of unemployment in the country particularly among the youths.
Governments accross the country should therefore create more jobs to combat unemployment.
The economy also need to be addressed as the bad economy particularly in the value of naira to other currencies need to be addressed.
