The Lagos state National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) is working with the State Ministry of Transport to ensure data capturing of Keke riders in the state towards their proper identification.
The State Secretary of NURTW, Comrade Usman Teslim who disclosed this while speaking with Focus News said they will enventually be given identification numbers and this will help towards identifying them whenever any issue arises.
Comrade Teslim said this will later be extended to Okada riders, buses drivers and all those that have business in the transport sector. He assured full cooperation of the state NURTW in the scheme as it will bring further orderliness in the informal sector of commercial transportation.
Speaking on measures taken by the state NURTW to sanitise the union,Comrade Teslim said with discipline measures already in place the union is no longer how the public perserved its members as touts, holigans or irresponsible as members are now discipline and comply with the rules and regulations of the union and have desist from any action that can cause disruption of peace
According to him, democracy is now embedded in the structure of the union which makes its election to be peaceful and smooth transition from one regime to another.
Comrade Teslim therefore called on all drivers, operators to continue to be discipline in their day to day activities and for the drivers to co-operate with traffic officers and not see them as enemies but responsible people doing their jobs to sanitise traffic on the roads.
"We are not yet there but working strongly to see how we can march forward with modern transportation system".
On plans by PenCom and the National body of NURTW to incorporate the union members into Pension scheme, Comrade Teslim said it is a welcome idea that will guarantee the future of members and enable them to access government loans at minimum interest rate in their transport business and buying of vehicles.
"This development is a good initiative because you can imagine somebody driving for 30-35 years and at the end of his service cannot have something to lay his hands upon for all he has worked for, he cannot say this is what I am going to use to use to continue my life after retirement.
"It will also give us opportunity to assess finance because most of our members use their own savings to purchase vehicles, they don't have opportunity to access loans even if they want to, the interest is going to be in the high side because it's not coming from the government side".
He advised PenCom to use the NURTW initiative as a test run and work towards bringing other unions, marketmen and women in the informal sector into the pension scheme.
On the achievements of the present state executive under the Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly called Seigo, he said his administration has achieved positive things that members are proud of.
According to him, the union built a modern park and named it after President Bola Tinubu and has been able to support the families of past chairmen with the sum of 5 million naira each, while the son of President Bola Tinubu, Seyi Tinubu also gave each family additional 2.5million naira, totalling 7.5million naira to each family.
In addition, he said the Chairman, Comrade Seigo has given 1.5million naira to about 40 late branch Officers families in appreciation of their contribution to the union. Also Comrade Seigo bought SUV vehicles for almost 38 state officials and presented palliatives for 4thousand drivers on the wheel.
He said it is in the plan of the administration to build health care centres in the 3 Senatorial district as public support before the end of the administration.
