Amaechi: Customs to Move Apapa Scanner Centre for Rail

By Joyce Okoli
The Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi on Monday announced that the Customs Scanner Centre at the Lagos Port Complex would be relocated to allow for the completion of the rail.
The Minister made the disclosure while fielding questions from journalists after an inspection to determine the progress of work at Apapa earlier today.
He said the progress has been recorded with the Nigeria Customs Service agreeing to move the scanners to accommodate the on-going construction.
His words:
If we have to work, we have to see what we are working on. First, we need to take this to the field to see if it can either be removed or not be removed. Luckily, Customs have agreed that we should remove the old scanner centre in the port, but it is a bit difficult.
Amaechi who said the laying of the last track was being stalled by the movement of the scanner disclosed that agencies concerned are brainstorming alongside a pool of engineers on how to resolve the knotty issue.
“We are going to the office now to have a meeting to know what to do about it. We are working hard to find solutions to the issue of laying the last track. I am not an engineer. I am just a policy maker. I am the head of the ministry.
“It is only when the engineers have come up with a proper solution and time to the solution, then I can speak on time. But for now, I cannot speak on time or when that will happen. The focus should not be on time. It is very technical. If I was focused on time, I wouldn’t have found out about the Customs building”, he stated.
The Minister further disclosed that some areas of the quays would also be worked on before the tracks are laid.
On his part, the Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, expressed optimism in the capacity of the rail to ease the movement of passengers and goods once fully operational.
TNMN reports that the Apapa Customs scanner centre has been out of use for years.
