The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria has issued a two week ultimatum to the Federal government for the payment of all monthly payments of seafarers or face shutdown of maritime sector.
The ultimatum was given in.Lagos by the President General of the union, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju at the instance of the newly elected President of Nigeria Labour Congress Comrade Joseph Ajaero, who frowned that the seafarers have not been paid their allowances.

Ajaero who was at the headquarters as part of his tour of unions was told by Comrade Adeyanju that the International Oil companies OIC had refused to obey government marine notice 106 of 2014 as well as extant stevedoring regulations on payment of desiring workers.
Ajaero said it is unheard of that the union had written to government to pay the seafarers since 2021 and since then the payment has not been made.

Comrade Adeyanju said the issue of payment of pension to aged seafarers in compliance with a subsisting court order has been lingering on for too long.
He also called for a minimum standard condition of service for workers as is the practice for the Nigerian ports authority, dock labour and seafarers.
Comrade Adeyanju also called on the NLC president to help resolve the issue of terminal operators whose contract has not been renewed by the authorities.
The NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero promised that his administration would be proactive in addressing workers problems.
