Customs seizes unregistered pharmaceuticals worth 550 million naira

Concerned about the increasing rate of drug abuse and its inherent effect on our youths, Nigeria Customs Service has arrested 2 suspects in connection with importation of unregistered pharmaceutical drugs worth over N550 million through Tin-Can Island port into the country.

The  drugs were intercepted and seized based on intelligence report which revealed that the drugs were concealed as electrical materials in 2 containers with bill laden numbers: 227578945 and 22789171.


After the arrest one of the suspects Boniface Ike claimed to be the importer and offered a bribe of N50 million for his release but the offer was rejected thus leading to his arrest.


Area Comptroller Tin-Can Island command of the service Mr.Adekunle Oloyede who made this known on Monday said that on arrival of the vessel the 2 identified containers were immediately transferred  enforcement station.


He noted that after conducting physical examination it was discovered that container number MRSU 592397/0 declared to be containing 1,016 packages of electrical goods, ceiling fan,36 jewel (Copper)  and Chilly Cutter actually contained 5 cartons of  TimaKing, 120 Tapentadol, (Tamadol), Hydrochloride Csriroprodol capsule containing 50 rolls.as well as 84 cartons of  Gastro Resistant Omeprazol capsule BP 200mg amongst others.

According to him the suspects will be kept in custody pending the outcome of ongoing investigation after which they will be handed over to the appropriate government agency for prosecution.


As for the second container, the Area Comptroller said the electrical goods were used to conceal 10 cartons of Super Royal 225 (Tramadol), containing 50 rolls with 10 packets.


Other products seized according to him are 105 cartons of Omeprazoli capsule BP 200mg with 50 packets, 754 cartons of Bscsrdine with Codeine containing 200 bottles with 50 cartons of Manual Grater Machine used as concealment.


Oloyede added that the unregistered pharmaceutical products intercepted are regulated products of National Agency for Food  Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and didn't have the required permits and certificates for importation in which the documents are to ascertain the safety  of the products to Nigerians.


"Nigeria Customs Service will not be a part to nefarious acts which will jeopardize safety and lives of citizens of our dear country.as any fraudulent importer or agent who tries to perpetrate such acts will be prosecuted accordingly", the Area Comptroller declared.


In the same vein officers of Tin-Csn Island Command of the service seized frozen poultry products declared as Tangerines st Tin-Can Island Container Terminal in a container with Number TENU 804678/9 lodged on SDG No 70754 dated August 24, 2023..

PenCom urges Lagos State Governor to extend periodic pension increase to retirees under CPS, as Sanwoolu welcomes the idea.

The National Pension Commission (PenCom)  has called on  the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to extend periodic pension increases currently enjoyed by Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) retirees to those under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) to boost their monthly pensions.  The Director General of PenCom, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, made the request during a courtesy visit to Governor Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos State Government House on 7 May 2025. PENCOM pledges to see that Lagos State pays CPS retirees.

Director General of National Pension Commission, Ms Omolola Oloworaran has pledged that the Commission will fast track and work towards Lagos State government paying retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme what is due to them like their federal counterparts. She made the pledge at a media workshop in Lagos for journalists.
