Food and Beverage Senior Staff Association (FOBTOB) condems ban of satchet alcohol drinks, and fall of Naira to other currencies

By Afolabi Oyekunle.

The ban of the sale of satchet alcohol drinks and the continue fall of Naira to other currencies are twin problems that will affect the Food and Beverage industry drastically and cause manufacturers to lay off thousands of workers.

National President of Food Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association (FOBTOB) Comrade Jimoh Oyibo in a telephone interview told DailyFocus News Editor Afolabi Oyekunle that the twins problems will cause unemployment and could force manufacturers in the sector to send many workers packing.

FOBTOB National President Comrade Jimoh Oyibo.

Reacting to the demonstration of workers today at the NAFDAC office in Lagos to the ban of satchet alcohol drinks, Comrade Oyibo said the argument that the satchets constitute environment nuisance was not tenable as they could be recycled thereby creating more employment as done in developed countries.

He said it is not also tenable that they aided vehicle accidents as the major cause of accidents in the country is as a result of bad unmotorable roads.

Comrade Oyibo said the Association would not limit its protest to NAFDAC but will storm the National Assembly in Abuja tomorrow Wednesday 7th of February to demand the lifting of the ban.

He said what the government needs to do is to be proactive in solving the problems of the end products of satchet drinks.

The National President of Food Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association also said it was time the government address the continue drop in the value of the naira to other currencies.

According to him the rate of the naira which is about 1500naira to the dollar will kill the manufacturing sector and bring about astronomical rise in the cost of goods and services.

He said the nation could not afford millions of people being thrown out of jobs as this will lead to further crime, insecurity, banditry and kidnapping.

Comrade Oyibo advised the government to set up farm settlements in local governments across the country and embark on serious mechanized farming.

He believes the country has to produce enough raw materials locally to satisfy the yearnings of local manufacturers and produce enough food for Nigerians

Comrade Oyibo advised the government to fish out bandits storming the farms as there activities should not be an excuse. He believes if there are no government collaboration the activities of the bandits would have been a thing of the past.

The FOBTOB National President said the country is sitting on a keg of gun powder if insecurity driving away farmers from the their farms is not checked.

According to him the President should look at his cabinet and ensure that only capable people who can solve the country's problems are put in the right positions.
