Association of Senior Civil Servants call for review of 2014 Pension Act.

By: Afolabi Oyekunle.

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has called on the government to review the 2014 Pension Scheme Act as it shortchange retirees under the scheme.

Secretary General of the Association, Comrade Joshua Apebo speaking at the Lagos Office with ForumNewsEditor Afolabi Oyekunle said many things are wrong with the scheme as retirees receive less than those who retired under the old scheme.

He said  retirees under the old scheme receive 50percent higher pension  than those   under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

Comrade Joshua Apebo said this is not fair and should be looked into.

Comrade Apebo also frowned at the non payment of gratuity to the Pensioners under the Contributory Pension Scheme, as he said there was nowhere in the 2014   Pension Act where gratuity was abolished.

He therefore called on the government to restore the payment of gratuity to core civil servants.

According to Comrade Apebo, non-funded government organisations such as Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Ports Authority and many pay huge severance packages and wonder the exception of civil servants.

Speaking on the plan implementation of the Steve Orosanye panel on restructuring and rationalisation of federal government parastatals, commissions and agencies, he called on the government to adhere to the labour act and negotiate with the Industrial Unions before laying off any civil servant.

Comrade Apebo said said this will ensure that the workers are treated fairly and pay according to the labour act.

He said some of the features that necessitate the setting of the panel in 2012 are no more in existence and if the government still plan to go ahead, there should be a total review of the report
