The unregulated policies in the Transportation sector is a crucial factor affecting the economy and causing problems for the economy.
This is the view of a Transportation Expert, Dr. Oluwasegun Alade Musa, while x-raying the Transportation sector in the country.
Dr. Musa, Deputy President of the Nation Government Approved Freight Forwarders spoke to Transport Correspondents in Lagos, at a Forum organized by the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (Maran) at its headquarters in Apapa
Dr Musa who is the Managing Director of Widescope International Logistics Limited said all over the world the transportation sector is the driving force towards effective economy, but Nigeria is getting it wrong.
He argued that it is a sector that propels a nation in terms of prosperity and wondered why it is not having positive impact in Nigeria.
According to Dr Musa it is because the country has not injected the spirit of transportation in all policies and it's the reason why the country is where it is
He said without effective transport system and proper coordination and stop relying or coping other nations the country economy will remain backward.
According to him, from road transportation, rail, courier water transportation and pipeline there has been uncoordinated system. Looking at road transportation, he said it is the most unorganized, with no regulations, improper standard.
He argued further there is no reason why the pipeline should not be effectively organised to make it transport petroleum products across the country instead of relying on tankers, blaming this on the gridlock experience daily on the roads.
Speaking on rail transportation, he said the huge loans taking from China should have been deployed to cargo movement as this would have generated enough revenue to offset the loans, instead of deploying in to passengers transportation, buying luxurious coaches .
He argued that this has resulted into waste because we don't prioritize our needs .
He called on the government to allow indigenous companies participate in the courier business instead of leaving it in the hands of foreign companies as this will help in reducing unemployment. He said foreigner s cannot continue to run the business to the detriment of Nigerians.
Dr Musa also decried the multiple taxation in the transportation sector, as he said this is causing many operators to cut corners in order for their business to survive.
He challenged the government to put the right people in the aviation sector, as wrong people deployed to the sector do not add value to the sector .
Speaking on the Maritime Sector, he called on the Customs Services to fully digitalized it's activities to effectively facilitate trade.
He said all departments of its services should be digitalized and reduce human contacts because this constitute delay in many aspects of trade Facilitation..
