Cargo movement on the railway standard gauge from Apapa APM terminal to Moniya in IBADAN,Oyo State was relaunched in Lagos yesterday with Stake holders describing it as a big step to boost the economy and a seamless transportation.
The occasion was attended by key stakeholders in the Maritime industry, transport sector, and railway sector.
Flagging off the take-off, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa said this will facilitate import and export of commodities. He assured that the collaboration between the Nigerian Railway Corporation, APMT terminal and the private sector on cargo transportation is in the right direction to ensure that goods and services are transported to all parts of the country.
According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation Managing Director, each train will carry 35wagons of 35 by 40 feet or 35 wagons of 70 by 20feet containers or a mixture of both sizes .
Traffic schedule shows that the trains would move from APM terminal in Apapa on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with each trip carrying 35 wagons
To complement the service, two additional lines are at an advanced stage of completion which will bring the total lines to three.
Dr. Opeifa said though NRC and APM terminal have a long history of containers traffic to places such as Kaduna, Kano and other places accross Nigeria but they are mainly on the narrow gauge lines.
Records show that the NRC moved 362,327 containers comprising import and export in and out of APMT terminal on standard and narrow gauge in 2024.
Speaking at the occasion, the Chief Commercial Officer of APMT, Mrs Caroline Aubert-Adewuyi said the relaunched haulage service will reduce operational costs associated with road transportation.
She said the collaboration with Nigerian Railway Corporation was a commitment not only to revive the service from Apapa to IBADAN but to ensure long term sustainability. Mrs Aubert-Adewuyi assured that APMT is committed to offer a reliable service and sustain the service.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Akutah Ukeyima said rail transport is the best to carry goods and services to all parts of Nigeria as it is cheaper, safe and reliable.
Mr. Ukeyima commended the administration of President Bola Tinubu for initiating and support for all government government agencies to collaborate with the private sector to develop critical infrastructure.
