Lagos State deserves more local governments.... Hon. Lateef Ibirogba.

By Afolabi Oyekunle.

The creation of local governments is a Constitution matter as no local government can be created without the approval of the federal government according to constitutional provisions.

However many have argued that for meaningful development the states need to have more local governments to create desire impact at the grassroot level.

Lagos State presently have 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas LCDA.  The 37 LCDA are not recognized by the Federal Government hence are not alloted funds.

The efforts of the Lagos State Government to create more local governments were frustrated during the time of  former President Olusegun Obasanjo when the then Governor Bola Tinubu now President was  at the helms of affairs in the state

In its determination to see that there are positive impact at the local level, the state created 37 LCDA to complement the existing 20 local governments. The LCDA however are not given grant by the Federal Government as they are not approved.

Without any doubt these 37 LCDA since creation have proved their mettle in the areas of development, job creation, infrastructure and social impact in the lives of the people of their areas.

Giving the meaningful developments of these LCDA it is not a thing of surprise that members of the House of Representatives are tinkering to give legitimacy to the LCDA as a bill is now before the House to recognise the LCDA as full fledged local governments backed by the Federal Government.

Speaking to FocusNews on this development, a Chieftain of the ruling APC party, and the South West Organizing Secretary, Honourable Lateef Ibirogba said it is a welcome development and long overdue. He therefore called on the House of Representatives members to see that the bill receive quick acceleration and passage.

Honourable Lateef Ibirogba opined that given the large areas of many of the LCDA they deserve to be broken into more areas.

APC Chieftain Honourable Lateef Ibirogba

Honourable Lateef Ibirogba said for meaningful development and impact, the state needs more local governments.

Also speaking to FocusNews, the Supervisor for Sports and Youths Development at Agbado - Oke Odo LCDA, Honourable Shobayo Adetunji, also welcomed the idea and said it will make more funds available to them for meaningful projects.

He is also of the opinion that Lagos State deserves more local governments as if approved to become full fledged making 57 local governments they will still not be enough.

Honourable Shobayo commended President Bola Tinubu for giving autonomy to local governments, giving the fact that they are closer to the people.
