Governor Babajide Sanwoolu of Lagos state has assured the people of his government priority to make water ways in the state safe.
According to him, the safety of the passengers is being given top priority by Lagos State Waterways Authority by commiting to high standards, improve infrastructure and adequate training of staff and provision of modern boats and facilities.
These assurances were made at the opening of a 2-day Regional Ferry Safety Conference in Lagos put together by Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) in conjunction with Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa(MOWCA) and INTERFERY.
The Governor represented by the Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat said the government remains aggressive on keeping to international standard and will ensure collaboration with other stakeholders and international bodies
He therefore called on stakeholders to collaborate with the government and come to Lagos to invest in the waterways.
Governor Sanwoolu said waterways in Lagos state would continue to be enhanced with adequate training for personnel in LASWA.
He called on the National Inland Waterways to stop giving licences to sand fillers as this is destroying the cities.
According to him, water transportation cannot be efficient if the practice does not stop.
In his words, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Oshiyemi said the state will continue to witness transformation and set standards through digitalization, provision of adequate and deploy standard facilities to ensure safety.
The Commissioner said safety is a continuous journey which the state is not taking for granted. He therefore called for continuous collaboration among practitioners in the industry.
LASWA General Manager Mr. OluwaDamilola Emmanuel said the Authority does not joke with standard and adequate training for her personnel.
He said the state has recorded 90percent accident rate reduction through proper training for staff and an efficient rapid rescue team.
The LASWA General Manager said the state remains number one in terms of water safety.
He assured that waterways transportation will continue to be modernized through the Omi-Eko project through E-services, while more modern boats are being expected.
According to him, more investments are coming through international organizations particularly the EU.
The two days conference is being attended by top experts in Nigeria and abroad. The conference in particular is being given attention on safety, vessels maintenance, navigation of the waterways, vessels financing, risks, insurance and collaboration with Maritime training institutions.
