Train services on Warri-Itakpe route has been suspended once again after resumption recently, as the train derailed yesterday, Saturday, November 1.
Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said the train derailment occurred at approximately 19:30 hours, involving two out of the seven coaches of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) at Kilometer 212+8m, Agbor.
NRC in a release by the Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa said preliminary investigations indicate that the incident may have been caused by suspected track vandalism.
The Corporation however assured that all passengers on board were safely
evacuated to Agbor, and everyone has been fully accounted for as no casualties or injuries were recorded.
NRC said its recovery team, supported by security personnel, has been at the site since last night carrying out recovery operations and the efforts are progressing steadily and is expected to be completed soon.
"As a precautionary measure, train services on the corridor have been temporarily suspended to ensure comprehensive security and safety audit of the track and related infrastructure".
The Corporation regrets any inconvenience this may cause her valued passengers and the general public and assured that normal operations will resume as soon as it is verified safe to do so.
