LASWA/NIWA confirm Boat Mishap Near Igbologun, Activate Search and Rescue Operations.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have confirmed a boat mishap involving a Savvy Marine passengers boat on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at approximately 8:35 p.m, along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channels.

A statement Signed by Wuraola Alake,
Head, Public Affairs Unit, for  the Waterways Authorities, said  the boat was en route from Ilashe Beach House at the time of the incident.

"Upon receiving a distress alert, they immediately activated their Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, which responded promptly and worked in close collaboration with the Marine Police and other first responders."

According to the report, four (4) passengers have been successfully rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention, while  six (6) other passengers were recovered dead at the scene.

The report says search and rescue operations remain ongoing to account for all persons involved.

Preliminary findings indicate that the incident may have been caused by a collision with a submerged object; however, further investigations are still ongoing to fully assertain the cause of the mishap. 

LASWA and NIWA  assure members of the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.

The  two bodies  extend their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and assures the public of their continued commitment to ensuring safety on Lagos Inland Waterways. 

The Authorities also reiterate the importance of adherence to all safety regulations, including proper navigation practices and compliance with NO NIGHT TRAVEL rule.

PenCom urges Lagos State Governor to extend periodic pension increase to retirees under CPS, as Sanwoolu welcomes the idea.

The National Pension Commission (PenCom)  has called on  the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to extend periodic pension increases currently enjoyed by Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) retirees to those under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) to boost their monthly pensions.  The Director General of PenCom, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, made the request during a courtesy visit to Governor Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos State Government House on 7 May 2025. PENCOM pledges to see that Lagos State pays CPS retirees.

Director General of National Pension Commission, Ms Omolola Oloworaran has pledged that the Commission will fast track and work towards Lagos State government paying retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme what is due to them like their federal counterparts. She made the pledge at a media workshop in Lagos for journalists.
