Pensioners under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in Lagos State have called on the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu to expedite action and see that the unnecessary delay in the payment of their pension increases are removed.
Many of the Pensioners who spoke to ForumNews are not happy that their arears under the pension increases have not been paid as approved by the Federal government, despite that their federal counterparts have received their own.
The CPS Pensioners lamented that despite all the efforts of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme, in Lagos State, under the able leadership of Comrade Michael Omisande to get the Template of the payment to the Lagos State government, nothing has been heard from the government on when and plans to pay the arears.
According to the Pensioners it was a big relief when President Bola Tinubu approved the payment of the arears, which the Federal retirees are presently enjoying, but the Lagos State government has been lackadaisical in implementing it.
It could be recalled that Lagos State government was one of the first states to implement the CPS scheme in 2007, but has been footdragging in implementing increases approved for Pensioners under the scheme.
Many of the CPS Pensioners said the monthly payment under the scheme is ridiculous as a level 15 Officer who when in service earned over 200thousand naira is being paid not more than 70thousand naira monthly pension, which is not up to the present minimum wage for the average worker
According to the Pensioners, many of their colleagues had died because they could not adequately take care of themselves, while many suffer from one sickness or another without money to take care of themselves.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Council of the Pensioners, has warned that there would not be any compromise as regard the payment of the pension increases.
A statement from the Chairman, Comrade Michael Omisande, called on the Pensioners to be patient and abide in faith over the awaited Pension increases from the Lagos State Government.
