Dissatisfied with the non-payment of their Pension Arears as approved by the Federal government for Pensioners under the Contributory Pension Scheme, Lagos State Pensioners have given the Lagos state government up till the end of March 2026 to pay them or face Massive protests.
The Lagos State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme ( NUPCPS) Comrade Michael Omisande, made the stand of the Pensioners known at the Open Congress Day of the Pensioners to mark the nineth year of the establishment and affliation of it to the Nigeria Union of Pensioners.
Comrade Omisande reading his address.
Comrade Omisande said despite the fact that the Template for the payment has been received by the state government, it is still behaving as if it's not committed in paying the Pensioners.
He said this lackadaisical attitude towards the payment would no longer be tolerated by the Pensioners, hence the March deadline for the payment.
He assured that the Pensioners will engage in series of protests to show their grievances until the government respond positively and pay them.
He accused the Director General of Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) Mr. Babalola Obilana of footdragging on working on the Template despite that Governor Babajide Sanwoolu has directed LASPEC to work on it and report to the government.
He said, " Two months going, he does not know what to do on the Template. The question is does he have the knowledge of Actural Science? Has he been attending meetings at PenCom. If he cannot solve the Pensioners problem, then why is there?" He queried.
Comrade Omisande said under Obilana, Pensioners under Define Benefits Scheme(DBS) are owe 57 months arears of non payment of their consequential adjustment arears.
He also queried why Pensioners dues are being delayed when they receive Federal allocation constant increases and the Internal generated revenue in Lagos State is also on the increase. "Why is that bonds were not paid to retirees who retired in 2024 and 2025?".
"Why are staff of Lagos State University of Education not paid since 2023, allowing 30 of them dead?. Comrade Omisande said many Pensioners had died due to lack of money to take care of themselves, as one of the Pensioners just died few days ago.
Speaking at the occasion, Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Agnes Sessi, pledged that the Congress is with the Pensioners towards ensuring the Lagos State government, pay all their Arears.
She assured that the NLC is ready to take the matter to the Legislative Arm, towards justice if the Executive fails to pay the arears. Comrade Sessi believe that the Legislature will do justice to it.
Comrade Sessi however believe that the matter may not get to that stage, as Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, is a compassionate personality who will not deny the Pensioners their entitlement.
The NLC Chairman used the occasion to announce that the Congress this year will negotiate with the state government for increase in the minimum wage.
Three members of the Pensioners who died during the ongoing struggle were recognized and given awards of Excellence Service to Humanity. The Awards were received by representatives of their families. The deceased were Comrade Mahmud Dauda, Comrade Alabi, and Mrs. Modupe Awosika.
Daughter of late Mrs. Awosika was on ground to receive the plague and token given to the family to recognize her services
She thanked the Pensioners Association for not forgetting her mother and her humanitarian attitudes while alive.
