A look at the Textile sector in Nigeria shows it is struggling to survive. Hitherto in the 1980's , the textile sector was to be proud of boasting of industries across the country and providing jobs to many people.
Products from the textile industries then were to be proud of consisting of different brands of beautiful materials.
Not only did the textile industries employed thousands of workers, they also contributed highly to the country's GDP and economic growth.
However due to inconsistent economy policies which allowed influx of textile materials into the country, the once highly celebrated textile sector began to collapse leading to many companies closure and job loses.
A cursory look at the textile industries today shows that only few of the companies are in existence as many had closed down. The once booming sector is now in a comatose as those in existence are still struggling with smuggle textile materials into the country.
To many observers, the near collapse of the textile sector is a major contribution to unemployment in the country as the sector was one of the largest employers in the country.
However it seems all these will soon be a thing of the past. Speaking to FocusNews, President National Union of Textile Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, Comrade Peter Godonu said the textile sector is now coming out of the woods, after years of neglect.
According to him, the Federal government is looking towards the textile sector in its industrialization policy towards reducing unemployment and economic growth.
Comrade Godonu said President Bola Tinubu has set up a committee to look into the challenges facing the sector and to come out with recommendations to boost the sector.
He said this is a commendable efforts, believing that the committee will come out with policies that would help in revamping the sector.
Comrade Godonu said the textile industry is vital to the country's economy growth and national development.
On this year's workers day coming up on 1st of May 2026, Comrade Godonu believes that Nigerian workers should be paid living wages and not just minimum wage.
He called on members of the Textile Union and workers to be progressive in what they are doing, and not be resilient.
Comrade Godonu also called on affiliates of the textile Union to come together to confront challenges on their ways, towards forging ahead.
