Senior Citizens decry ill-treatment to them in the country.

By Afolabi Oyekunle.

The Senior Citizens Age 50Plus Support and Development Foundation has appealed to the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to urgently address the growing hardship faced by elderly Nigerians across the country.

This is according to a press statement by its President Comrade Gbenga Ogunlaru, and  Mrs Helen Ojerinde, National Secretary.

According to the Foundation, millions of Nigerians between the ages of 50 and above are currently experiencing severe economic difficulties, including hunger, unemployment, poor healthcare, lack of accommodation, and inadequate social welfare support.

The Foundation noted that many senior citizens who once served the nation diligently are now unable to afford basic necessities of life, including food, medication, and shelter.

It stressed that the current economic realities have placed unbearable pressure on older citizens, many of whom have no pensions or sustainable means of income.

The organisation therefore called on the Federal Government to establish special intervention programmes targeted at senior citizens, including:

- Monthly stipends and welfare support

- Free or subsidised healthcare services

- Employment and empowerment opportunities

- Prompt payment of pensions and gratuities

- Affordable housing schemes

- Food support programmes

- Social protection and care services for the elderly

The Foundation further urged both federal and state governments, private organisations, religious bodies, and well-meaning Nigerians to join hands in restoring dignity, hope, and comfort to elderly citizens.

“We believe that a nation that honours and supports its elderly people is building a compassionate and responsible society,” the Foundation stated.

The Senior Citizens Age 50Plus Support and Development Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare, protection, and development of older persons in Nigeria and called for immediate action to improve their quality of life.
