Chairman, Agbado-Oke Odo LCDA, Honourable Jimoh Ishola Ejigbadero has absolved himself and the council from the destruction of properties at Amikanle in the council area.
In a release signed by him, he said it has become necessary to set the record straight.
He said the demolition in Amikanle was a Lagos State Government exercise, not a Local Council project
"My attention has been drawn to a video by one Raymond, identified on TikTok as @ponmilesaka, in which he alleged that I was responsible for the demolition exercise carried out along the AIT Road corridor in Amikanle. For the benefit of residents and in the interest of transparency, it is necessary to set the record straight."
According to him, the demolition exercise in question was not initiated by the Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA. Records show that the exercise commenced as far back as 28th November 2024 and was carried out by the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and other relevant state agencies.
This raises a fundamental question: How could I have masterminded an exercise that took place before I assumed office and at a time when I was neither in government nor involved in the process?
It is equally important to state that Local Councils do not possess the statutory authority to order or execute such demolitions. Matters relating to physical planning, right-of-way enforcement, and powerline setbacks fall squarely within the jurisdiction of the Lagos State Government and its designated agencies.
While it is unfortunate that the second phase of the exercise occurred during my tenure as Executive Chairman, it must be emphasized that this was not a council initiative, nor was it an action we desired. It was a continuation of a state government exercise carried out in accordance with existing regulations and safety requirements.
To further underscore this fact, on Monday, 22nd June 2026, our administration received a delegation from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development led by TPl. Olamilekan Odujebe, (Pix Attached) who inspected affected locations where structures were found to be encroaching on the stipulated 30-metre powerline setback corridor. Their visit reaffirmed that the exercise remains a Lagos State Government matter aimed at protecting lives, property, and public infrastructure.
Regarding the road construction project on Awonusi Street, Suberu Oje, it is important to clarify that the pace of work has been affected by the ongoing rainy season. This is not peculiar to that project alone, as four other road projects within the LCDA have also been temporarily placed on hold pending more favourable weather conditions.
Road construction requires suitable weather conditions, especially at critical stages, to guarantee quality, durability, and value for public funds. Rather than rush the process and compromise standards, our administration has chosen to prioritize long-term results that residents can rely on for years to come.
Let me also reiterate that the road project beside the Council Secretariat is not a Local Council project. It is being executed by the Lagos State Government and was originally initiated during the administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. While progress may appear slower than expected, we remain hopeful that the project will be completed soon for the benefit of residents, businesses, and commuters.
As leaders, we may not always control every event that occurs within our jurisdiction, but we owe our people honesty, transparency, and accurate information. We sympathize with everyone affected by the demolition exercise, just as we understand the impatience of residents awaiting the completion of road projects.
However, facts remain sacred. The demolition in Amikanle was a Lagos State Government exercise, not a Local Council project, and the temporary slowdown in road construction is a consequence of seasonal weather conditions, not neglect.
Development is a journey that requires patience, understanding, and collective responsibility. Our commitment remains unwavering: to continue engaging residents, communicating truthfully, and pursuing projects and policies that improve the quality of life for every citizen of Agbado/Oke-Odo.
